Tom is the CEO of a company called Transforming Corrections and an adjunct Professor at Portland State University. Previously Tom was a Research Manager for two years and the Administrator of Religious Services for nine years in the Oregon Department of Corrections. Tom’s practice, research interests and publications focus on skill development among chaplains, correctional staff and volunteers, increasing the fidelity of correctional agencies and programs to evidence-based and humane principles, organizational change, the role of spirituality in the desistence process, and the integration of religion and spirituality into effective correctional programming. Tom began his career as an attorney in Ireland, then became a friar (or monk) with a Catholic religious order called the Carmelites, and moved into corrections shortly after immigrating to the US in 1987. Tom has degrees in law, philosophy, theology, counselling and religion and is a member of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains in the U.S.
